Obituary for Alberta Baker
Mother Alberta Oretha Baker, affectionately called "Sweet Child", was born on April 10, 1921 to the late Irvin and Beulah Kendrick Griffin. She was the eighth child in a family of ten children. She was united in marriage to James Timothy Baker, Sr., who has preceded her in death, as well as two sons, Arthur Lee and Curtis B. Baker. She received her secondary education in the public and vocational schools of Decatur County. She furthered her education at the Union College, now known as Albany State College, Albany, Ga., where she received a life profession teaching certificate. She took classes at the Albany State College, University of Georgia Athens, GA., Thomas Tech in Thomasville, GA. and Savannah State College where she completed her degree. She was converted in September 1932 at St Paul P.B. Church under the leadership of Elderly Harry Stephens. Through those years she was blessed to serve as secretary, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, Usher, Janitor, Mentor of the youths, helped organized the Bible class and Prayer Band; member of the Mothers Board, Usher Staff, secretary of the Georgia Florida Christian Union Circle, attended Sunday School Conventions and Associations. She worked for the Decatur County Board of Education, teaching for 36 years and The Sherman & Williams Day Care Center of Attapulgus , GA for three years. She is still listed as Substitute Teacher with the Ga. Board of Education. She were a Matron of Oak Ridge Chapter No. 250, Attapulgus, GA. Marie H. Dixon Order of The Golden Circle. She leaves to cherish her memory and legacy her six daughters: Hattie Mae Jackson of Quincy Florida, Evangelist Remel Spencer, Minister Derotha (Jimmy) Jones, Havana, FL, Missionary Christana Baker of Fowlstown, GA, Shelia Faye Baker and Constance Baker of Attapulgus GA., and one step-daughter, Nina M. Richardson of Orlando, FL. Her three sons: Freddie Baker of Bainbridge, GA, Elder James A. (Barbara) Baker of Gretna, FL, John (Cynthia) Baker of Attapulgus GA, and one step-son James T. Baker Jr. Denver, Colorado. She also leaves one sister-in-law Ruby Baker; 32 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren and a special God Son, Johnny M. Tatum.
