Obituary for Betty Jean Smiley
Sister Betty Jean Smiley was born on July 14, 1937 in Bainbridge, Georgia to Nelson and Eunice Smiley. One of four children. She attended school there until her mother relocated to Orlando, Florida, where she continued her education and joined Jones High school marching band until graduating. Betty went on to college at Florida A&M University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts Degree. Upon completion she moved to Newark, New Jersey and getting a job with Newark Housing Authority. Working and becoming a Manager for senior citizen's housing. Betty retired after 30 years of dedicated service with the City of Newark. A few years later moving back to Bainbridge, Georgia where she had friends and family members living there. She enjoyed the peace and quiet. Joining First African Missionary Baptist church. Sharing and giving of her years of experience, advice and counsel to so many of her friends and family. Her unwavering God-fearing spirit radiating in her words of wisdom. Betty peacefully, departed this life on Friday, December 25, 2015 on Jesus Christ's birthday. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Donna C. Crawford and Norvel Hawk and brother: Marvel Hawk. She leaves to cherish her memory her sister, Barbara A. Battle, of Somerset, NJ; Sister-in-law: Joanne Hawk of Orlando, FL; Nephew: Tyrone Battle Jr.; Three nieces Nicole Laudenslager of Milford, CT; Monique Nelson (Cornell) of Somerset, NJ; and Marshelle Hawk of Orlando, FL; She is also survived by a host of cousins, great nephews and close friends. �� ���
