Deacon Billy Stubbs, Sr.

Deacon Billy R. Stubbs Sr. was born December 13, 1942, as a twin in Bainbridge, Georgia, to the late Sam and Adell Stubbs.

Deacon Billy Stubbs departed this life on July 17, 2021.
Christian Experience:
Deacon Stubbs gave his life to Christ at an early age. He was a member of First Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Bainbridge, Georgia. Deacon Stubbs served as a deacon for over 40 years. Deacon Stubbs loved the Lord, and he served as a Sunday School teacher for 30 years and laymen president of the Flint River Missionary Baptist Association for five years. Deacon Stubbs loved to sing and dance in church regardless of what church he attended.
Deacon Stubbs also loved to study the Bible and write speeches.
Education and Work Experience:
Deacon Stubbs was raised in Bainbridge, Georgia, and graduated from Hutto High School in 1962. He served in the United States Military after graduating high school. Billy graduated from Florida State University College of Business in Accounting on March 7, 1978. In 1967, Deacon Stubbs became the first black policeman in Bainbridge, Georgia. Mr. Stubbs served in the Georgia National Guard and retired from the Georgia National Guard as an Operations Sargent 1st class. After retiring from the Army and being bored at home, Deacon Stubbs decided to help children in the Decatur County School System in Special Education, where he worked for ten years. After retiring from the school system, Deacon Stubbs enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Deacon Stubbs married Betty Handsford on June 19, 1963, and they were joined together for 58 years. Mr. and Mrs. Stubbs have six children.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, three brothers, and one sister. Deacon Stubbs was one of 14 siblings.
Deacon Stubbs is survived by his wife Betty Stubbs and his seven children Gayla Harris (Gary) of Attapulgus, GA; Billy Stubbs Jr. (Pheobe) of Memphis, TN; Michael Stubbs (Arlene) of Bainbridge, GA; Jerome Stubbs of Bainbridge, GA; Derrick Stubbs (Eve) of Bainbridge, GA; Sherrie Sweet (Joe) of Bainbridge, GA, and Anthony Stubbs (Crystal) of Bainbridge, GA; 17 grandchildren, and six great grandchildren also survive Mr. Stubbs.
