Reflections of A Life Well Lived
On April 6, 1927, a sweet spirit descended upon the earth named Carrie Bernice Powell. Carrie was born to the late Johnny B. Powell and Viola Jarrideau Powell (Boles) in Midway, Georgia (Liberty County).
Carrie was a good, active, and involved student. Of course, she had no choice … because her mother was her teacher! She enjoyed sports and even played basketball. Carrie matriculated at Savannah State College, earning her Bachelor's degree in Home Economics. She was later employed by the University of Georgia as a member of the Cooperative Extension Service and served as the Assistant State 4-H leader, allowing her to travel throughout the state of Georgia, educating families on life skills such as sewing, cooking, and gardening. She enjoyed this work because she loved working with and helping others.
Carrie’s Christian journey began early in life. She accepted Jesus as her Savior and was an active member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Riceboro, GA. Upon meeting the love of her life, Frank McGriff, Carrie married him on August 12, 1972. She continued serving God alongside her husband in their home of Bainbridge, GA. Carrie was an active member of the First African Baptist Church and served faithfully as a Deaconess, a committed participant in the Hattie S. Mann Senior Choir, and a devoted Bible study participant. She was known for her beautiful Christ-like character and always serving with a smile. Carrie was kind to everyone, no matter who they were, and was always ready to lend a helping hand, give food, provide clothing, or even transportation to anyone in need. Carrie and Frank were married for 36 years.
Known for her amazing culinary skills, Carrie’s delectable dishes were always finger-licking good and put smiles on everyone’s faces. The food was magnificent (especially her sweet potato pies), and the presentation was just as impressive with full place settings of her fine china dishes and crystal ware! Carrie was indeed one-of-a-kind!
Being a woman of strong and unshakable faith, Carrie would always say, “I dare you to trust Him!” On Monday, May 27th, she trusted the “Master Man,” as she affectionately and reverently referred to her God, to deliver her sweet spirit back home.
Carrie was preceded in death by her husband, Frank McGriff; mother, Viola Jarrideau Powell Boles; father, Johnny Bright Powell; sister, Johnny Mae Powell Morrison; sister, Aldonia M.
