Obituary for Charles A. Washington Sr.
CHARLES A. WASHINGTON, SR.- of Oak Ridge, TN, departed this life, September 7, 2014 at U.T. Medical Center. He was the son of the late Ernest and the late Lillie Washington. Mr. Washington was a dedicated member of First Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an Elder,Usher, and served on the Pastor Committee. Charles received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Albany State College, Albany, GA and his Master's degree in organic and physical chemistry from Fisk University, Nashville, TN; other studies were pursued at Atlanta University; Fort Valley State College (Georgia) and Clark College in Atlanta. He began his professional career at Crisp County School System in Cordele, Georgia, where he served as the head of the science department. After graduating from Fisk College in 1973, Mr. Washington was employed by Union Carbide to work at the Y-12 plant as a research chemist, on the Oak Ridge Reservation; his advanced research there made our nation safer in a dangerous time; he holds many patents on that work, much of which remain classified. After retirement from the Y-12 plant, Mr. Washington returned to the place of his birth and taught school in Gadsden County, Florida for several years; he also was appointed by the the course of his professional career, he received several patenet, local, state and federal awards. But Mr. Washington may have been better known nationally as one of the oldest heart transplant patients in the world; he lived a full life for thirty-two years aftre his transplant; he knew first hand that each day was a blessing, "Fantastic", he would say. Mr. Washington was preceded in death by, wife, Eva Mae Washington; son, Samuel Washington. He leaves to mourn his passing, son,Charles A. (Jody) Washington Jr., daughter, Charlotte (Jay R.) Jeffreys; grandchildren, Mankell, Rose, Charles,III, Christopher, Colin, Austin and host of beautiful great grandchildren, Alvin Jerome, Jazzmyn, Jaiden, Jacee, Jaia, and a host of other relatives and friends.
