Obituary for Dennis L. Lumpkin Sr.
Dennis Lamar Lumpkin Sr., 57, of Newport News, Virginia passed away peacefully at his Brother's home in Titusville, Florida on December 26, 2015. He was born March 3, 1958 in Tifton, Georgia. He is the Eldest son of Ms. Josephine Lumpkin-Dalhouse and Mr. Willie Lumpkin, Sr. Throughout his school career Dennis was very academically active. He was affectionately nicknamed "The Professor". By his family and friends he was lovingly called "Tab". During Dennis's High School junior year he went to the Florida State Championships for wrestling. He was also a diver on the Swim team at Titusville High School. He was physically and academically active and could always be seen carrying large stacks of books under his arm. Dennis was in the United States Army for eleven years, rising to the rank of Captain. He was a member of ROTC when he attended Albany State University. He graduated as an Honor Student in Health and Physical Education in 1981. He was awarded an adward for academic excellence each year he attended at Albany State University to obtain his undergraduate degree in Health and Physcial Education. He graduated with his Master's Degree from Penn State University in 2012 and was awarded Outstanding Graduate Student in Health and Education. After being honorably discharged from the military in 1992, he entered the Teaching Profession. He began teaching in the Newport News School District and then transferred to Harrisburg Pennsylvania. He retired from the Pennsylvania City School District in 2013. After leaving Pennsylvania, Dennis returned to Newport News, Virginia and was employed by the Hampton City School District until the time of his death. Dennis loved to spend time with his Family, especially his children and grandchildren. He also loved spending time with his friends. He was united in Marriage to Dr. Sade Middleton, Lumpkin-Sheafe, in 1982 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Bainbridge Georgia. To this union were born three children, Dennis Lamar Lumpkin Jr, Quintin Dewayne Lumpkin and Sade Ferra Lumpkin. He has Five Brothers and Four Sisters. He became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity as a student at Albany State University and was a charter founding member of the Ft. Eustis Army chapter of Kappa lota lota of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity in Newport News, Virginia. He was actively involved in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. He is survived by His parents Josephine Dalhouse and Willie Lumpkin Jr. his children Dennis Lumpkin III and Alexander Lumpkin, brothers, Michael Lumpkin (Joanne), Gary Lumpkin, Reginald Lumpkin (Delavia), Marcus Lumpkin and Willie Lumpkin III,; sisters Andrea Roberts, Melissa Johnson, Tamika Lumpkin and Deidra Lumpkin, a special Motherly relationship with Edith Pearl Middleton and the late Mr. Emory James Middleton Sr. He also had and a very special loving relationship with his cousin Fredrick Ward (a big brother to him). He also leaves behind a host of nieces , nephews, cousins, friends and all of his Fraternity Brothers in Omega Psi Phi Inc. He was preceded in death by his Maternal Granparents, the late Reverend Maxie and Laura McCoy, His paternal grandparents Doretha and Willie Lumpkin Sr., his great-grandmother Ms. Clara Durr of Nashville, Georgia. His aunts: Dorothy Lumpkin, Maxine Pearson, Leona Redding, And his Uncles: Ernest McCoy, Joe McCoy and Cousin Sonia Person.
