Obituary for Donald Gene Laster

Donald Gene Laster, affectionately known as “Gene,” was born on November 17, 1948, in Bainbridge, Georgia, to the late Thomas Laster and Inell Akins. He departed this life on Tuesday, May 5, 2026. He was raised and educated in Decatur County, where he developed the strong values of faith, family, and hard work that guided him throughout his life.

Gene met the love of his life in July 1969 and married Deloris Laster. Their union was blessed with five children: Van, Ursula, Rhonda, Tasha, and Jr.

Gene was a dedicated and faithful employee of Flint River Mills, where he worked diligently for over 40 years. His strong work ethic earned him respect from both his co-workers and the community.

More importantly, Gene was a man of determination and perseverance. He accepted Christ as his Savior, was baptized, and joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Cleaveland Sanders, where he served faithfully until his health declined.

Gene lived life to the fullest, finding joy in simple blessings—spending time with his family and grandchildren, fishing, and walking in faith. His life was a testament to love, humility, and devotion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Inell Akins and Thomas Laster, as well as his brothers, Willie Akins and Derrick Akins, and his sister, Linda Jones.

He leaves behind cherished memories, a loving and devoted wife, Deloris Laster; his five children: Vanessa Emmons, Ursula Moore (Mario) of Tallahassee, Florida, Sheronda Laster, Dr. Latasha Jackson (Larry), and Donald Laster Jr. (Patrice). He also leaves one beloved goddaughter, Cheena Bunch (Shawn) of Augusta, Georgia.

Gene’s legacy continues through his 13 grandchildren: Martavias, Matthew, Deon, Austin, Lashonda, Brandon, Chris, Anissa, Dee, Ethan, Javon, Jalan, and Jada; as well as his 8 great-grandchildren: Matthew, McKenzie, Mason, Amber, Kyree, Londyn, Nori, and Alani.

He is also survived by his brothers: Jerry Akins, Charles Akins, and Norris Akins (Regina); and his sisters: Lois Parker, Phyllis Freeman (Sam), and Janice Ann Akins, all of Bainbridge, Georgia. He leaves behind his sister-in-law, Cora Kendrick of Bainbridge, and brother-in-law, James Sheard of Fort Myers, Florida, along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.

Though Gene has departed this earthly life, his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who loved him. His life was a reflection of God’s grace—faithful, humble, and full of love.

"Well done, thy good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." (Matthew 25:23)
