Obituary

Flora Jean Fountain, affectionately known as Peggy, passed away on December 28, 2024, at the age of 81, in Bethesda, MD.

Peggy was born on May 12, 1943 to her parents Jeanie and Gracie Mae (Davis) Bryant, in Seminole County, GA, and raised in Bainbridge, GA. Peggy graduated from Hutto High School in 1961, and went on to cosmetology school in Macon, Ga. Peggy later moved to New Jersey, followed by love, Ernest James Fountain, and there they were wed in 1966. They eventually settled in East Orange, NJ, where they gave birth to their children Sheena Renee and Ernest James Jr. "Ernie".

In 1986, Ernest and Peggy moved their family to Chesapeake, VA, where Peggy owned and operated Peggy's Beauty Salon, until she retired. She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Chesapeake for over 35 years, where she participated in the Senior Choir.

Peggy was a loving wife and mother, who loved raising her children, making many sacrifices to do what's best for them. She was also dedicated to her work as a beautician, styling hair for nearly 50 years, with her independent and entrepreneurial spirit leading her to own and operate her own salons in New Jersey and Virginia. She enjoyed spending quality time and taking trips with her family and friends and she served the Lord faithfully at her church.

Peggy is survived by her loving husband Ernest, her children Sheena and Ernie, daughter-in-law Angela, grand-daughter Laila, and mother-in-law Mary Francis Hicks. Peggy was preceded in death by her beloved parents Jeanie and Gracie Mae, her brother Eugene “Sugar Boy”, and her nephew and “second son” Harvey Jr. "Ray Ray”, and well as her niece Lora "Bae-Bae". Peggy is survived by her sisters Mary Chandler, Jeanette Bryant “Shug”, and Alice Bell-Frazier. She leaves behind her nephews Frank "Chico", Joe, Jimmy "Boo", Keith and Eugene, her nieces Deborah, Angela, Cheryl, and Corlissa, numerous great nieces and nephews, beloved lifelong friend Cheryl Powell, and a host of cousins and close friends.
