Obituary for Gwendolyn Campbell Wright
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens." Ecclesiastes 3:1
A TIME TO BE BORN: Gwendolyn Genevieve Campbell-Wright was born and reared in Bainbridge, Georgia. She was the youngest of ten (10) children born to the late Jim and Sadie Reese Campbell on March 1926. She enjoyed the pleasure of being part of a very large, loving, caring, and happy Christian family.
A TIME TO PLANT: "Gwen", as she was affectionately called, received her public school education at Union Normal School in Bainbridge, Georgia; the Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia; and the Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
A TIME TO LOVE: She married Attorney Roy C. Wright on December 23, 1972. The couple resided in Washington, DC over thirty-five (35) years. She loved life and was well-known for her unparalleled loyalty to her family and friends. Each year she sent financial greetings to her sister to be distributed to all the mothers and fathers in the Campbell family, both biological and extended.
A TIME TO SERVE: For years "Gwen" used her educational preparation as a second grade teacher at Lillian E. Williams Elementary School in Attapulgus, GA. In Washington, DC she taught second grade at Leckie Elementary School. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior early in life and joined Nelson Chapel A.M.E Church. There she served as Church Musician for twenty-five years using her God-given talent as soloist in the Celestial Choir as well as piano instructor for many young people in the Community. She was founder and first president of the Elite Pearls Club, a social organization for young women. She was a lifetime member of the Oak City Chapter #253 Order of the Eastern Star.
Gwendolyn was a God-fearing virtuous woman who enjoyed singing praises to her Lord and Savior. With her angelic voice and spirit, she was a most faithful first soprano, encourager, supporter, and dynamic fund-raiser for the Cathedral Choir of Metropolitan AME Church in Washington. She also sang in the Women's Choir and the United Voices Choir. In addition, she was a faithful member of the Washington Conference Choir of the Second Episcopal District. She was acknowledged and recognized for outstanding service to the community at the Hospitality Club’s 2015 Mother’s Day Breakfast.
A TIME TO DIE: Mrs. Wright made her transmission Monday evening, November 21, 2016 in Washington, DC and joined God’s Heavenly Choir to sing His praises forever. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, eight (8) siblings: Alice, James, Thelma, Ora Lee, Dorothy, Tommy, George, and Julius; and seventeen (17) nieces and nephews.
