Obituary for Leefonza Screen Jr.
Leefonza Screen, Jr. went home to Jesus on Sunday, February 7, at age 80.Lee was born to Leefonza Screen, Sr. and Mildred (nèe Hinson) Screen on January 26, 1941 in Sanford, Florida where he attended New Rochelle Public Schools. However, he would return to Florida in the summers with his sister, Bernice, where he witnessed a segregated South.Lee believed in hard work, and it helped build his character. As a young man, he worked as a caddy on the golf course earning tips, and he also worked as a neighborhood paper boy. As an adult, he worked part-time in real estate. However, he was most proud of his 22 years of loyal and dedicated service to the New York Police Department from 1964 to 1986. Throughout his career, he worked the 45th precinct in City Island in the Bronx, the 23rd and 28th in Manhattan, and 113th in Queens. He received numerous commendations and recognitions, including a write up in the newspaper with the heading, "Speedy Cop Chases And Nabs Mugger." He shared stories of drug kingpins, Bumpy Johnson and Frank Lucas; seeing stars like Aretha Franklin and James Brown while working his beat near the famed Apollo Theater; chasing down criminals; and being on duty the night Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. After retiring, Lee relocated to Quincy, FL. Because of his hardworking nature, he took a position with the Quincy Annex and the Department of Corrections, retiring after 14 years. It was during this time that he met and married Angela (nèe Thomas). The two met in the St. John A.M.E church parking lot after service, and after a two month courtship, they married in 1991. They were married 29 years, one month shy of their 30th wedding anniversary. After Lee's second retirement, he continued to remain busy by working in the yard, cooking, and baking. Along with being hardworking, he was a problem-solver and caring individual.  He took on difficult projects and offered wise counsel. If Lee saw a need, he took care of it, monetarily or otherwise. He was also a sharp dresser and known for wearing a suit or slacks on his off days. He enjoyed photography, fishing, and good preaching. He could be seen tapping his foot to good gospel singing, and on the morning of his transition, he passed peacefully tapping his foot to gospel music. He is predeceased by his parents, Leefonza Screen, Sr. and Mildred (nèe Hinson) Screen, and sister, Bernice Daniels.Lee leaves to cherish with his memories and wisdom a loving wife, Angela D. (nèe Thomas) of Quincy, FL; his children, Scott G. Screen of Bronx, NY, Shawn L. (Mutsumi) Screen of Tecamulca, CA, Elboya T. Thomas (Stacy) of Tallahassee, FL, and Dr. Latrecha K. Scott of Tallahassee, FL; his brothers, Carlos Screen, Irrix Screen, and Aaron Screen, all of New Rochelle, NY;  five grandchildren, Christian and Michael Screen of Bronx, NY, LáRogue Screen of Jersey City, NJ, and Elivia and Brahmin Thomas of Tallahassee, FL; 4 great-grandchildren; a devoted friend, Percell L. (Dolores J.) Bartlett of Camden, SC; god-daughter, Stacey M. Bartlett of Bowie, MD; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and other sorrowing family and friends.
