Obituary for Mary Odis Fletcher
The Life of Mary Odis Fletcher
“I will lift up my eyes to the hills, from whence cometh my help”. Psalm 121:1
A sweet spirit was born to Samuel and Willie “Vase” Hawkins Fletcher in Liberty County, Florida on June 8, 1928. They name this baby Mary Odis Fletcher. She was the sixth child of the ten born to the family.
The family lived in the community near Sumatra, Florida where she first attended school. The family moved from Liberty County to Gadsden County when she was 11 years old. She furthered her education at the Blooming Field Elementary School and Union High School in Hardaway, Florida.
It was in the Hardaway Community that Mother Mary Odis first learned to work in those old tobacco fields where her sisters, Peggie and Icy also worked. Those sisters would get together in the evening and talk about that old tobacco field and wished they could get away. Finally, the family moved to Leon County, Tallahassee, Florida. They went to church on Campbell Street and shouted the victory in their soul.
After her membership on Campbell Street where her uncle, Elder Elijah Hawkins was the Pastor, Elder Titus Deas became her Pastor. Later, Elder Al Scott became the Pastor and finally, Elder Howard McMillan became her Pastor. Now, Bishop McMillan, he has been her Pastor for 31 years. She had a special love for Bishop McMillan.
This Sweet Spirit was an extraordinary person, full of life and ready for a healthy walk every day. There were so many people who would meet and greet her on her daily journey. This sweet spirit was full of laughter and joy. She enjoyed speaking to everyone along her daily walk.
Mother Mary Odis’s Sweet Spirit was strengthened by her Favorite scriptures and songs. Her favorite past time was Encouraging Others.
On Saturday, May 7, 2016, Mother Mary Odis must have remembered the scripture in Psalm 55:6 “Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest!” She is resting in Paradise.
Preceding her in death was her son Eddie Montgomery, her parents, 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
Cherishing her Sweet Spirit are three children, David Fletcher-Arnold (Gloria) of Quincy, Florida; Julia “Grace” Williams (Eugene) of Tallahassee, Florida; and Patricia Fletcher-Edwards (Pastor Harold, I) of Leesburg, Georgia; two Goddaughters, Mother Lucinda Benjamin and Minister Valeria Anderson (Elder Rudolph) of Tallahassee, Florida; one sister, Mother Peggie Rogers (Samuel) of Tallahassee, Florida; brother, Moses Fletcher (Heddie) of Bahama, North Carolina; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a special cousin, Pastor Betty Haynie of Orlando, Florida; devoted nieces and nephews; a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, a wonderful church family and a host of sorrowing family and friends.
