Reflections of Life
Mother Peddie Mariah Holt was born on April 4, 1919 to Miss Winnie Holt and Mr. James Albert. She was raised by her maternal grandparents, Mr. James and Mrs. Jane Akins Holt, all preceded her in death. She attended Pine Grove School in Decatur County, Georgia.
She confessed CHRIST as her Savior at the tender age of 13 and united with Tabernacle A. M. E. Church and later with Mount Zion AM.E. Church.
On October 23, 1938, she married Mr. Elbert Burney and to his union 3 children were born. Elbert preceded her in death on October 28, 1973. She later married Mr. Joseph O. Edwards who also preceded her in death.
Mother Peddie united with Emanuel Missionary Baptist Church in 1950. She served in many capacities in her Church, Union, and Association as Sunday School teacher, Youth Director, Choir member, Deaconess, Mother, Dining Room Manager, and Mission President. In the community, she served as President of the City-Wide Mission and was a life-time member of the Pride of Bainbridge Order of Eastern Star #479.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin and friend.
She was also preceded in death by her step-father: Mr. Carter Winbush; brother Edward Winbush and sisters: Zelpher and Lizzie Winbush.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters: Ms.
Claudenia B. Jones of St. Petersburg, FL and Ms. Linda Burney-Henry of Bainbridge, GA; one son: Mr. Alonzo E. Burney and his wife Patricia of Bainbridge, GA; One step-daughter: Mrs. JoAnn E. Smith and her husband Tom of Bethlehem, PA; Grandchildren: Michael Elbert Henry and wife Grendy, LaKisha D. Mitchell and husband Terry, Mishella N. Furse, Lashonda Burney, LaQuinda Christian; two step grandchildren: Shelly Dewitt and Jeffery Matthews; Great-grandchildren: Chasitty D. Henry, JaVonte Henderson, Courtney A. Furse, Ashley V. Clemons, Morgan S. Clemons, Corya A. Furse, Malik Henry, Brandi Burney, and London Sturgis; Step Great grandsons; LaQuan Copeland, Daren Copeland, Tyrese Mathews; Step great-great grandchildren: LaNiya Copeland and Daren Copeland, Ill; sister: Annie Doris Staton of Philadelphia, PA; God sister: Louise Williams of Bainbridge, GA; special cousin: Cleotha Chandler of Bainbridge, GA; special niece: Fannie Pinkney of Cairo, GA and other sorrowing relatives and friends.
