Obituary for Napoleon Gaines
NAPOLEON GAINES began his life's journey on December 29, 1923 through the union of the late Tom and Margaret Jackson Gaines of Bainbridge, Georgia. He was the third child of eight siblings. Napoleon accepted JESUS CHRIST as his personal SAVIOR at an early age, was baptized in Four-Mile Pond, and became a member of Adams Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Due to the untimely death of his father, he assisted on the farm to help his mother support the family and was unable to finish high school. In his early twenties, Napoleon courted Merrill Gaines, proposed, and married her on August 25, 1943. Shortly after their marriage, they began a new life journey in Detroit, Michigan. They were blessed with five children-four sons: Napoleon Edwin Jr., Michael Lee, Leonard Joe, and Lesley Tyrone; and one daughter, Gwenda Joyce. Napoleon became a member of Christ Reform Church #1, where he was a Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Adult Choir. He served there for over thirty years. When Christ Reform Church #2 was established, he was asked to become a founding member and under the leadership of Reverend Eddie Brown was ordained as a Deacon. Napoleon worked at General Motors Corporation in Pontiac, Michigan as a skilled laborer for thirty years, retiring in his early fifties. During retirement he used his entrepreneurial skills as a "handyman" throughout the Detroit community and acquired several properties to supplement his income. In December of 1979 he married Daisy Turner, and after twenty-seven years together, he became a widower. Napoleon moved back to the homestead in Bainbridge, Georgia in May of 2011, where he tended his herd of cows and enjoyed living on the family land until he was called Home to be with THE LORD on Saturday, May 24, 2014 while under the loving care of his great niece Ashley Gaines. He leaves to cherish his memory a loving daughter, Gwenda McDonald of Dallas, TX; one son, Michael Gaines of Detroit, MI; one grandson, Shauane Lee of Detroit, MI; one devoted brother, Ananias Gaines (Pauline) of Bainbridge, GA; three sisters: Vergeree Shaw of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Lula Smith of Bainbridge, GA, and Willie Gussie Roberts of Detroit, MI; a goddaughter, Jauwana Myree of Detroit, MI; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
