Time to Be Born

Mr. Peter James Bruton, Sr. was born on July 20, 1955, in Bainbridge, Georgia, to the late Margaret Ann Emmonds Bruton and Cleveland Bernard Bruton, Sr. He was the third of six children born to this union and was blessed with a close knit family that helped shape the values of faith, family, and compassion that would guide him throughout his life.

Time to Serve

At an early age, Pete accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and joined Nelson Chapel AME Church in the 60s. His faith remained a cornerstone of his life. Throughout the years, he faithfully served the church in various capacities, including as a member of the Sons of Allen and the Board of Trustees. His commitment to God and service to others reflected the strength of his character and the depth of his devotion.

Time to Learn

Pete received his education in the Decatur County School System and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1973. From an early age, he felt a calling to serve families during their most difficult moments. This passion led him to pursue a career in funeral service, enrolling at Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, where he graduated in 1976. The education and training he received there laid the foundation for a distinguished career that would touch countless lives throughout Florida & Georgia.

Time to Labor (it’s own page)

Pete's life's work was rooted in service, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to his community. His journey into funeral service began in the late 1960s when he met Mr. Deci Guyton of Guyton Brothers Funeral Home, who brought his hearse to Holley Service Station for maintenance where he worked. That encounter sparked a passion that would become his life's calling.

After completing his education at Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service, Pete dedicated himself to serving families during their most difficult moments. He went on to own and operate Bruton Mortuary for more than three decades, building a legacy founded on professionalism, dignity, and genuine care for others. Through his work, he provided comfort to countless families throughout Florida & Georgia earning their trust and respect across generations.

A trailblazer in public service, Pete made history as the first African American Sheriff and Coroner of Decatur County. He later served the citizens of Decatur County as Coroner for sixteen years & 2 years as Deputy Coroner, carrying out his duties with fairness, compassion, and integrity. Whether serving in public office or standing beside a grieving family, he approached every responsibility with humility and grace.

Pete was widely known and deeply loved for his warm spirit, gentle yet strong demeanor, and kind heart. His influence extended far beyond the walls of the funeral home. He mentored, encouraged, and befriended countless morticians, funeral directors & coroners, offering wisdom, support, and guidance to those entering the profession.
