Obituary for Rita Nix Williams
Mrs. Rita Mae Nix Williams was the oldest child born on September 18, 1932 in Gordon, Alabama to the late R.T. and Eula Nix. Two siblings preceded her in death. Leo Nix and Delia Nix Joiner A graduate of Ashford Colored High School ’51 in Ashford, Alabama. Rita was secretary of her class, was selected as Most Likely to Succeed, Most Likely To Marry, and Best Dancer. Upon completion of high school she moved to Bainbridge, Georgia where she met and married Andrew Williams in 1954. He preceded her in death in 1985. This union was blessed with two sons and three daughters. Her oldest daughter Michele Williams Battle preceded her in death.
She joined First African Baptist Church (Webster St.) served faithfully as choir member, usher and secretary of Mission in Action. Rita worked as a nurse and housekeeper. She retired after working 18 years for the Visiting Nurses Association. She has resided in Jacksonville, Florida for the past two years and was a member of Hopewell Church where Dr. Gary L. Williams, Sr. is the senior pastor. Rita answered God’s call and departed this life on Saturday December 3, 2016 at Community Hospice of Jacksonville.
She leaves memories to her daughter and son-in-law Marsha and Eddie Hatcher (Jacksonville) daughter Maxine Williams (Atlanta) Sons Andrew Williams Jr. (Bainbridge) and Larry Williams (Atlanta) Oldest granddaughter and grandson Rita Lashawn Battle (Bainbridge) Maurice Y. Williams (Elizabeth City, N.C.) Uncle Willie and Reola Nix, special cousins L.C. Black, Richard “Jacob” Gray, Rhunette Mitchell. Brother/Sister-in-Laws Robert and Lillian Williams (Atlanta) Marcus and Lillian Williams (New Jersey). 10 grandchildren 18 great-grandchildren, a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, other relatives, loving neighbors and special friends
