Obituary for Robert Lee Sanders, Jr.

Ret. SFC Robert Lee Sanders, Jr

Ret. SFC Robert Lee Sanders, Jr., son of the late Robert Lee Sanders, Sr and the late

Serena Sanders was born on September 3, 1943 in Bainbridge, GA. On Friday, March

7, 2025, Robert peacefully made his transition from this life into the presence of God at

Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA.

Robert accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. He later became a devoted

member of First Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where he faithfully served until

he left Bainbridge to begin his military career. Throughout his life, Robert remained

committed to his faith, strengthening his relationship with God by worshiping at various

churches in the Augusta area.

He was a graduate of the class of 1961 from Hutto High School. Robert dedicated his

life to service–both to his country and to his loved ones. He proudly served in the United

States Army for 20 years demonstrating unwavering commitment, courage and honor

throughout his military career. His years of service were marked by resilience,

leadership and a deep love for his fellow soldiers and country. He received many

decorations, medals and badges throughout his military career. He retired from the US

Army in 1983 and continued his career as a mail carrier for the United States Parcel

Service until his second retirement in 2005.

Beyond his military career, Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother,

and friend. He was united in holy matrimony to Maxine Gooden on August 16, 1966 and

to this union they were blessed with one beautiful, loving, and caring child, Angela

Nicole Sanders, and one beautiful, brilliant, and ambitious granddaughter, Kamiyah Ann

Jones. He was known for his strength, wisdom, kindness, and sense of humor, always

offering a listening ear, sound advice, and a warm presence. His faith in God was the

foundation of his life, and he lived with integrity, generosity and love.

He was an avid fisherman who found joy in spending time on the water with friends and

family. He also loved deer and dove hunting, cherishing the moments shared with his

brothers and nephews. These outdoor adventures brought him great happiness until his

health began to decline.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Serena Sanders, and siblings,

Earsler Nell and Kenneth Sanders.

He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory: his loving and dedicated wife of 58 years,

Maxine Sanders, daughter Angela Sanders, granddaughter Kamiyah Jones, all of

Augusta, GA, siblings Warner Lee Sanders (Doris) of Rochester, NY, Therman Sanders

(Gladys), Esterene Sanders, Jimmy Sanders, Sr. (Hazel), Murray Sanders, Sr.

(Christine), all of Bainbridge, GA, an aunt, Madis Dunbar of Fort Lauderdale, FL,

Godsons Napoleon Clayburn,Jr and Timothy Moore, both of Augusta, GA and a host of

devoted family members and friends.
