Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, 2020 at Pine View Cemetery, Bainbridge, Georgia.

A public memorial service will be held at a later date, to be announced.

Obituary

Elder Dr. T. Bernard Clayton was born to Dolphus Clayton and Laura Martin Clayton in Bainbridge, Georgia on October 30, 1945. He entered his eternal home on April 1, 2020. Spiritual endeavors and academic pursuits influenced Bernard’s entire life.

In 1963, T. Bernard was the fourth ranking honor graduate in his class from Hutto High School, Bainbridge, Georgia. Four years later he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley, Georgia where he was listed as member of Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities along with many other awards, honors and accolades. After serving as a Music Specialist and English teacher in the Walton County Public School System, he furthered his education at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, where he received a Master’s degree with distinction. Several years later, Dr. Clayton attended at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona where he received a doctorate in Music History and Voice Performance.

On June 12, 1971 Elder Dr. T. Bernard Clayton married the lovely Miss Barbara Ann Johnson in Grantville Georgia.

After receiving his Master’s degree, T. Bernard Clayton joined the faculty at the North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, North Carolina. In 1978, he joined the faculty at Wiley College, Marshall, Texas. During his 42 year tenure at Wiley College, he held many positions which include chairperson of music education. Dr. Clayton served on many committees including Religious Emphasis Week Committee, Founder’s Committee, Baccalaureate Committee, and Commencement Committee. He also served as Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Mu.

In Bainbridge, Georgia, spiritual development of Truby Bernard Clayton began at the First Born Church. His ministerial call was first recognized when he was a child in his Sunday school class. He brought messages and taught youth lessons in his local church and surrounding areas. In all communities in which he lived, he served congregations of the Church of God In Christ. While in Evanston, Illinois, he served the Faith Temple C.O.G.I.C. followed by the Wells Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Greensboro, North Carolina; then, the Mount Olive C.O.G.I.C. in Tucson, Arizona. After receiving his doctorate degree in Tucson, Arizona, the Clayton’s moved to Atlanta, Georgia and became members of the Hinsley Temple C.O.G.I.C. In 1978 they began 26 years of service at the White Temple C.O.G.I.C in Shreveport, Louisiana and in 2003, the Claytons served at the Victory Drive C.O.G.I.C in Marshall, Texas. On July 22, 2019 he received his appointment as pastor at the Gainesville C.O.G.I.C. in Waskom, Texas by Bishop Nelson J. Gatlin, Jurisdictional Prelate of Texas Northeast Third Jurisdiction.

Dr. T. Bernard Clayton was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and numerous musical organizations.

Preceding Dr. Clayton in death are his parents, Dolphus and Laura Clayton.

Those cherishing memories of his life are his beloved wife of 48 years 9 months, Barbara Ann Johnson Clayton; cousins, Renee Venisee, Michael Moore (Sharlene), Jerome Moore, Bartholomew Jackson (Erica), all of Bainbridge, Georgia; God daughter, C. C. Gray; other relatives and friends.
