Obituary for Bertha Jackson

Her Story

Bertha Jackson (born Bertha Cooper), 95, passed away on February 8, 2024, at her home in Bainbridge, Georgia. She was born on March 1, 1928, in Bainbridge, Georgia, to the late Jim Cooper and Ruby McCullough. Bertha was the oldest of six siblings, four of whom- Jerry McCullough, Catherine McCullough, Willie Helen McCullough, and Olivia McCullough- preceded her in death.

Bertha grew up in Bainbridge, Georgia, and received her early education in the Decatur County Public School System.

Bertha’s early confession of Christ led her to unite with St. James Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Timothy Wilson. She served as a faithful member until her health failed.

Bertha was joined in matrimony to the love of her life, Ishman Jackson, in 1945. They were happily married until he died in 2006. During this union, Bertha and Ishman adopted her nephew as their son, who affectionately became Ronnie Jackson (who preceded her in death).

Bertha was a devoted wife, mother, cook, and homemaker. She was passionate about caring for children, which she did through the foster care system for many years.

She leaves to cherish her memories: one sister: Verlia Greggs (R.B. Greggs, deceased), Miami, Florida; Six nieces: Patricia McField, Miami, Florida; Felicia McRae, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Debrah McCullough, Cynthia McCullough, Felicia Stanford; and Jaren Terry, all of Chicago, Illinois; Six nephews: Clarence Nelson (Lois), Columbus, Georgia; Harry Henderson (Andrea), Norfolk, Virginia; Larry Greggs, Randy Greggs (Alvonetta), Phelix Greggs, and Victor Greggs (Sherly), all of Miami, Florida; Twenty-Five Great nieces and nephews; Forty-Five Great-Great nieces and nephews; 6 Great-Great-Great nieces and nephews; and a host of cousins and other relatives.
