The Life and Legacy
Mary Smart Burns, born May 30, 1952, in Bainbridge, GA, to the late Osborne and Daisy Mae Pierce, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2024, in Valdosta, GA.
Mary grew up in Decatur County, attending the local public schools before dedicating 45 years of service to the school system. Known for her unmatched kindness and culinary talents, she was famous for her homemade cinnamon rolls, which delighted all who had the privilege to taste them.
Mary was a devoted wife to Willie Burns and a loving, selfless mother to her children: Stacy (Felicia) Smart of Montgomery, AL, Walter (Denna) Hodge, Jr. of Bainbridge, GA, Michael (Lakeisha) Smart of Valdosta, GA, and David and Donald Smart of Bainbridge, GA.
She was a cherished grandmother to Stacy Smart Jr., Brandon Smart, Alexis Smart, Justin Smart, Brian and Brandon Campbell, Stephanie Hodge, Walter Hodge III, Zandria Wilson, Datavious Harper, Walter Hodge, Antonio Kelly, Jamichael Smart, Jarvis Smart, David Smart Jr., Dariyon Smart, Devon Smart, Journee Smart, Shyteria Smart, Donovan Webb, Jasmine Smart, and Jordan Smart.
A talented and passionate cook, Mary found immense joy in preparing soul food that brought her family together, creating countless memories around the table. She dedicated her life to her loved ones, going above and beyond to nurture not only her children but also her children’s friends, nieces, nephews, and any child who needed her loving care. She had a special fondness for babies and a deep love for people, but her family always remained her greatest treasure.
Mary’s love for praising God and singing gospel hymns brought peace and happiness to her life. Although her beautiful singing voice was rarely heard in public, those who knew her well cherished the moments when she shared her gift. She also enjoyed playing card games like Spades and Tunk, finding joy in friendly competition and time spent with loved ones.
Mary is survived by her siblings, Osborne (Lillie Mae) Pierce Jr., Delores Corbitt, and Dorothy (Joe) Pierce. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Ronnie and Alphonso Pierce, Joseph Wright, and her sisters, Patricia Mathis and Louvenia Wilson.
Mary’s warm spirit, unwavering love, and dedication to family will forever be remembered. She leaves behind a Wilson legacy of resilience, kindness, and devotion that will continue to inspire future generations. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.
